LAURENS - Union County gave its best effort in weeks, but still fell, 21-7, to Laurens on Friday night.
After blow out loses to 4A schools Spartanburg and Gaffney, UCHS put up a fight against the 4A Raiders.
The Jackets out-played the Raiders in the second half. The defense shut down Laurens after the break. The offense got going when Nick Monroe found Deon Thompson on a 20-yard touchdown strike and Alex Tucker added the extra point.
But missed opportunities and mistakes kept Union County from an upset win.
"We keep making big mistakes - turnovers and just shooting ourselves in the foot," said Jacket coach David Lipsey. "I thought we played well in the second half. We got the offense going. If we'd finished a couple of drives it would have been a different ball game. I thought we had a chance to make it closer. We came alive and played hard. Defensively we defended them a lot better."
Laurens (4-0) led 21-0 at halftime, as the Jackets committed three turnovers in the first half.
Union County fumbled on its first possession, handing the Raiders the ball on the 12-yard line. Toe Patterson ran for a 4-yard touchdown.
In the second quarter, Travis Burnside - who finished the game with four catches for 126 yards - caught a 29-yard pass to set up another Laurens' touchdown. Patterson tossed a 1-yard halfback option pass to quarterback Logan Hall.
On Laurens' next possession, a double pass involving Bo Whitney and Hall went 42 yards to Deventran Cromer. That set up a 1-yard score by Logan Duncan.
Ruben Perez made all his extra points for the Raiders.
Union County (1-3) hosts Broome next Friday.
