Cavaliers to much for Jackets

Sports Editor - Union Daily Times

ROEBUCK - The Dorman Cavaliers dominated the Union County Yellow Jackets 35-0 on Friday night after losing its quarterback to an injury.

Quarterback Bo Whitney was hurt on UCHS' second series. He ran 10 yards on third down and went down hard, suffering a broken collar bone. He was taken to the hospital.

"That was big in the ball game," said Union County coach David Lipsey. "We knew Dorman was a good football team. I thought we got after them early and were excited about playing, but (Whitney's injury) did take the wind out of our sails."

Dorman (2-0) took the punt and scored quickly after Christopher Graham ran 21 yards and then Christian Graham scored on a 49-yard touchdown run. Bo Lindsay's kick was good.

The Cavaliers added a score in the second quarter. Charon Peake caught a 61-yard touchdown pass from Johnny Foster. The kick made it 14-0.

Keiston Steven took over at quarterback for the Yellow Jackets, who had a scoring opportunity just before halftime. Marcus Whitener ran 40 yards to get UCHS in position, but two ineligible receiver calls stalled the drive.

In the second half, Dorman struck quickly to extend its lead after intercepting a Jacket pass. Peake caught a 35-yard touchdown pass and the kick was true.

After a Union County fumble, Dorman struck again on a 4-yard Stephen Thomas run. Lindsay's kick gave the Cavaliers a 28-0 lead.

"They hit us with a couple big plays in the first half and then came the third quarter and we turned it over early," said Lipsey. "We just didn't get back in the game."

A UCHS player was ejected late in the third quarter and the personal foul penalty helped Dorman to another score, as Walter Canty took the ball in from 1-yard out on the first play of the fourth quarter. The kick was good for the final margin of victory.

After the score both teams put in reserves. The Jackets had a chance to score after a high snap on a Dorman punt, but an interception in the end zone killed the drive and preserved the shutout.

"You have to give Dorman credit - they're good," said Lipsey. "It's a learning experience for us and we'll try to go back and work to get better."

No new information was available on Whitney at the end of the game.

"We wish him well," said Lipsey. "He's a hard working kid - a great kid. Our thoughts and prayers are with him. He's a tough kid - he'll be back." Stevens had received limited snaps at quarterback after missing weeks of practice playing in the Dixie Boys World Series."

"He was thrown in the fire," said Lipsey. "You've got to admire his toughness and his play. He's going to learn. He's going to get better. We'll work hard next week getting him ready. He gets more work under him and he'll be fine."

The road doesn't get easier for Union County (1-1), which travels to defending state champion Gaffney next Friday.

"We're going to get better," said Lipsey. "It's going to toughen us up for our region. Our goal is the region championship and we'll keep working toward that."
