Jackets over Patriots 14-0

GREENVILLE - A week after allowing 50 points, Union County's defense pitched a shutout for a 14-0 win over J.L. Mann.

The Yellow Jackets clinched a playoff berth with its first road win of the season.

"We had a good week of practice defensively," said coach David Lipsey. "I thought our attention to detail was great. Our coaches did a great job."

Mann's offense, which can be potent, was frustrated through the night and the Jackets came up with some big defensive plays, including several sacks, holding the Patriots to 147 yards offense.

"I think we called blitzes at the right time," said Lipsey. "It was a good job calling the game by coach (Jay) Brannon. We put pressure on them and had some timely sacks. Our linebackers did a good job on their blitzes of making the tackles."

On offense, UCHS did what it had to do. The Jackets had 384 yards offense, with Marcus Whitener rushing for 188 yards.

Kierre Smith caught a 32-yard pass and a 42-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Dwight Brannon on the Jackets' second possession of the second half.

Mann fumbled the kickoff and Whitener broke free for a 17-yard touchdown run. Alex Tucker made both kicks.

"We started dominating the line of scrimmage and started wearing on them a little bit," said Lipsey. "Our passing game really helped us out tonight. Kierre made some great catches and Dwight made some good  throws."

The first half was scoreless, but both teams moved the ball.

Mann went 53 yards on 11 plays, but the drive stalled on the Union County 2-yard line.

The Jackets went 69 yards in 16 plays, but the drive stalled on the Mann 26-yard line.

Mann got to the UCHS 30, just before time ran out in the half.

The second half opened with more of the same. UCHS went 60 yards in 12 plays, eating up eight minutes, before the drive stalled at the Mann 26-yard line.

After a Mann punt, the Jackets scored all the points they needed.

The Patriots penetrated to the Union County 17-yard line late, before the drive ended on an incomplete pass and the Jackets finished off the remaining few seconds.

UCHS (5-4, 4-2) hosts Greer next week in the regular season finale.
