Shelby 10 Union County 0

Shelby (N.C.) 10, Union County 0: A 12-minute drive could be considered the highlight of the night for the Union County Yellow Jackets, except that the end result wasn't a score.

The Yellow Jackets drove down the field, under the direction of quarterback Bo Whitney and tailback Marcus Whitener.

When they got first-and-goal, though, the offense stalled and Whitney threw an interception under tremendous pressure from two blitzing Golden Lions.

"I thought we controlled the line of scrimmage during the drive," Union County coach David Lipsey said. "We didn't get the points, though. We've got to score."

Shelby, the two-time defending 2A champions, scored early in the game on an option play. The Yellow Jackets allowed quarterback Howard Thompson to get free and he ran for a 46-yard touchdown.

Late in the first quarter, Union County was called for two late hits that gave Shelby plenty of yards toward a 37-yard field goal by Turner Almond.

Union County had another chance inside the 10-yard line, but a penalty on first down moved the Yellow Jackets back and then they couldn't score on the following four downs.

Lipsey said that those mistakes were costly.

Union County offensive lineman Josh Lowrey and Thompson were named players of the game.
